Anetka Kaminska is happy living in a tiny village in Poland with her grandmother and younger brother until one day a letter arrives from her father who is working in America. Included with the letter are 3 tickets for passage to join him in Pennsylvania. Anetka is excited until she learns that her father has arranged for her to be married to a man she has never met. When her grandmother refuses to leave Poland, she gives her ticket to a soldier in their village who promises to accompany Anetka and Josef to America.
