It's 1914 and things in Europe are heating up. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have developed steam driven iron machines known as Clankers while the British Darwinists have been busy creating animals. Alek, prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who must keep his identity secret, is on the run when he meets Deryn Sharp, a girl disguised as a boy working for the British Air Service. The two will find that they must work together if they and their friends are going to survive.
